چکیده
i Acknowledgements I want to thank my advisor, Dr. Jeff Dupree, for providing me with knowledge and advice over the past two years, and for helping me learn what it means to be a researcher. He always urged me to learn more and move forward with a clear hypothesis in mind. His guidance was instrumental in completing my project and I cannot thank him enough for everything he has done for me. I would like to thank my other lab members for all their assistance and encouragement. I especially want to thank Kareem Clark and Savannah Benusa for providing me with their expertise and teaching me, and for their encouragement when obstacles arose. Their guidance was invaluable and I could not have completed this project without their help. I want to thank Nick George, my fellow master's student, for providing support as we persevered through our research together. I also want to thank Brooke Sword, our laboratory technician, for helping me with my mice and our undergraduate students for their assistance in various aspects of this project.

Taking Advantage of the Systemic Immune System to Cure Brain Diseases
The systemic immune system has the ability to modulate multiple brain functions, including autonomic responses, glial reactivity following neural injuries, and neuronal excitability. Immune stimuli also influence microglia subpopulations originating from blood progenitors, and neuroprotective and reparative capacities of blood-derived microglia were recently described in mouse models of spinal ...
متن کاملO 3:Therapeutic Potential of a Novel NMDA Receptor Subunit 2B Antagonist in a Mouse Model of Autoimmune Neuroinflammation
Glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity and neurodegeneration have been shown as pathophysiological hallmarks of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune inflammatory CNS disorders. N‑Methyl‑D‑Aspartate (NMDA) receptors play a pivotal role in the mediation of neuronal glutamate excitotoxicity leading to cellular damage and apoptotic cell death. Current treatment approaches targeting glutamate exc...
متن کاملP89: The Relationship Between the TNFα of the Microglial Cells and the Multiple Sclerosis
TNFα is an inflammatory cytokine and the caspase and apoptotic processes can be activated by TNFα There are two classes of TNFα (solTNF and tmTNFα) which are important from the receptor aspect, so that solTNFα and tmTNFα can attach to the TNFR1, but tmTNFα just attaches to the TNFR2. Microglia cells are resident immune cells of the central nervous ...
متن کاملWhite Matter Diseases YES, Multiple Sclerosis NO, Sjogren - Larsson Syndrome: Another Differential Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis
Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome (SLS) is an inherited autosomal recessive neurocutaneous disorder with congenital ichthyosis, spastic diplegia or quadriplegia and mental retardation. We report a case of Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome with clinical profile (mental retardation, ichthyosis, spastic diplegia) and MRI findings such as seen in multiple sclerosis (MS). So this rare syndrome can be another differen...
متن کاملE 02 INF - β signaling and microglial activation in retinal degeneration
Microglial activation is a hallmark of human retinal degenerations including Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) [1]. Genetic mouse models have shown that chronic alerted microglia trigger and perpetuate retinal degeneration leading to vision loss [2-3]. Immuno-regulatory microglia exist in the early activation phase but are overwhelmed by rapidly expanding pro-infla...
